About Scratchboard

Bighorn
Scratch art is a unique art form in that the image is scratched into the medium, rather than painted on in the traditional manner. The medium itself consists of a sheet of paper or board (also known as Clayboard ©) which is coated with a white clay which is then overlayed with India ink.

To create the image, the artist uses a sharp instrument, such as an X-acto © knife, to scratch away the India ink to reveal the white clay underneath. (Much like drawing in white on black paper)

Then if the artist wishes to add colour, they may use watercolor or thinned acrylic paints.
